Perhaps most of us think of the use of honey for sweetening tea or on toast but it was a more integral part of cuisine in older times, e.g., mead and baklava. It is time consuming and requires certain expertise to establish a hive - apparently beehive stealing is a thing these days. Which is all to say how valuable the bees would be to a family and why they would be treated with respect. Fortunately, beekeeping has become more popular as a hobby and that should help to combat the threats the bees face.
